Volunteerism

Dr. Hathcoat devotes free time to serving others, especially those unable to afford dental care. He has provided services for, and supports, the following organizations:

Healing California

Healing California provides free dental and vision care across the state of California to those who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness. By providing access to care, Healing California is reducing barriers to care and promoting prevention-based public health. Their innovative travelling clinic provides care to those who may not otherwise have access to dental or vision clinics.

In 2019, Dr. Hathcoat coordinated the Delta Veterans Group Stand Down on the Delta dental clinic. Healing California provided the necessary dental equipment, supplies, volunteers, and administrative support that helped ensure a successful clinic. At the Stand Down, over 150 veterans were provided dental care and the clinic ran so efficiently that no one was turned away. This success would not have been possible without the assistance of Healing California.

Dr. Hathcoat worked with Healing California at the 2019 Stand Down on the Delta and currently serves as a member of the Healing California advisory board for Standard of Care. https://healingca.org

Delta Veterans Group

Delta Veterans Group is a Veterans service non-profit that assists our Nation's finest men and women with housing, employment, health, and education services. Founded in Contra Costa County in 2012 by Army veteran J.R. Wilson, DVG has now grown to provide services to surrounding Northern California areas including Alameda, Monterey, Napa, San Joaquin, San Francisco, and Solano counties.

DVG was proud to bring the first "Stand Down on the Delta" to Contra Costa County in September of 2015. Stand Down on the Delta was a four-day, three-night event that provided homeless and at-risk Veterans full medical treatments, court and legal services, DMV, Chaplain services, housing, addiction and mental health counseling, employment, and a myriad of other community services. During the event, Veterans were also provided with clothing, meals, showers, sleeping tents, and a safe place to "stand down" for the duration. The next Stand Down on the Delta will be held on August 11-14, 2017 at the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds located in Antioch, CA.

In addition to Stand Down on the Delta, DVG strives to implement other programs to assist our Veterans with their basic needs. The most recent programs started in 2016 include the "Stand Up" program in which Veterans are assisted with purchasing homes using their VA Loan, "Stand Out" which will help keep our Veterans employed, and "Project Semper" which will bring Post Traumatic Stress counseling to Contra Costa County as well as bring awareness to the 22 Veterans who lose their life to suicide every day.

Dr. Hathcoat was proud to volunteer his time in coordinating the dental clinic in 2017 and 2019. He was responsible for acquiring financial and supply donations, recruiting volunteers and other public health organizations, coordinating clinic layout, managing the dental clinic, and providing dental care.  deltaveteransgroup.org

Just Health 510

Just Health's mission is to empower people every day to live a happy and healthy life, by providing complete oral health care regardless of ability to pay. Established in 2016, Just Health operates a clinic in Oakland and provides dental treatment for U.S. military veterans, at-risk and homeless patients, and others without insurance or who cannot afford dental care.

Dr. Hathcoat co-founded Just Health 510, served as Vice President, and volunteered his time providing dental services.  www.justhealth510.org

Berkeley Free Clinic

Founded in 1969 as a "street medicine" clinic that quickly found a niche and a permanent home in the Berkeley community, BFC has become an icon in the area, and has served countless thousands in a variety of ways during its 45-year history. BFC provides free medical and dental care for the local community and is funded through donations and grants. An emphasis on education, self-knowledge and an increasing awareness of appropriate resources infuses all medical, dental, counseling, and information/referral services. The dental clinic provides comprehensive free dental care for patients from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, but primarily serves homeless and others who are unable to afford dental care.

Dr. Hathcoat served as Associate Director of the Dental Clinic, helped with fundraising and donations, and volunteered his time providing dental services.  www.berkeleyfreeclinic.org

Project Homeless Connect

In 2004, then-Mayor Gavin Newsom and the San Francisco Department of Public Health created Project Homeless Connect (PHC) as a way to bring necessary services to people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco. PHC uses a unique approach to service delivery to meet the needs of homeless San Franciscans.

In one day at a Project Homeless Connect event, a person experiencing homelessness can find services that would otherwise take months to secure. During each event, corporations, nonprofits, and government agencies provide participants with services through PHC.  These services include dental care, eyeglasses, HIV testing, housing information, food, hygiene products, medical care, mental health services, SSI benefits, legal advice, California identification cards, voice mail accounts, employment counseling/job placement, wheelchair repair, addiction services, and more.

Dr. Hathcoat has volunteered his time providing dental services at San Francisco County and Contra Costa County events.  projecthomelessconnect.org

CDA Cares

An estimated 10 million Californians experience barriers to dental care. The California Dental Association and CDA Foundation host CDA Cares, a program that allows volunteer dentists, with the assistance of other dental professionals and community volunteers, to provide dental services at no charge to approximately 2,000 people at each event. Through CDA Cares, efforts to educate the public and policymakers about the importance of good oral health and the need for an adequately funded dental safety net are having an impact. Adult Denti-Cal benefits eliminated by the state in 2009 were partially restored in 2014; however, the program remains chronically underfunded and leaves many, including the working poor, without access to care.

Dr. Hathcoat has provided volunteer dental services for CDA Cares.  www.cdafoundation.org/cda-cares
